Project Overview

From February 2nd to June 21st, 2024, we worked on an important project for Watkin Jones at the IQ Student Accommodation in Fountainbridge and Grove Street, Edinburgh. With a budget of £15,000, our main goal was to fix serious safety issues related to the building’s exterior insulation and improve fire safety. Our team at Edinburgh A1 Group was responsible for installing essential electrical systems to support this work.

The project was necessary because the insulation used on the building’s exterior was found to be a fire hazard. In the past, a fire had spread quickly across multiple floors due to the flammable materials. To prevent this from happening again, the building owner, IQ, and the main contractor, Watkin Jones, decided to replace the faulty insulation and improve fire protection. To reach the higher parts of the building, Mast Climber Work Platforms were used, which required a reliable three-phase power supply. That’s where we came in

Our Solutions

Our electricians had a challenging job of installing three-phase cables above the existing ceilings without causing any damage. We had to do this while the student accommodation was still in use, so we made sure our work didn’t disturb the residents.

We set up the three-phase power supply for the Mast Climber Work Platforms, including installing the necessary cables and industrial sockets on the scaffolding. Safety was our top concern, so we carefully secured the work area to keep both workers and students safe.

We also temporarily removed ceiling lights in the corridors and reception area, along with smoke and heat alarms, to make room for our work. Additionally, we installed new energy meters and consumer units to help monitor and control power usage.

Besides the three-phase power for the work platforms, we also set up temporary 110V lighting on the scaffolding to ensure the workers had enough light.

After finishing the installation, we carried out inspections and tests to make sure everything was safe and up to standard. We provided NICEIC certificates to confirm the work met all safety requirements.

Project Summary

In this project, we improved the safety and efficiency of the IQ Student Accommodation buildings in Edinburgh by replacing unsafe insulation and upgrading the necessary electrical systems.
